Would you like to beautify your garden? Are you thinking about planting something new? We suggest chokeberry – a plant which can be considered a plant of the future.
Chokeberry is a plant native to North America. It is cultivated as an ornamental shrub and also for its fruits. You can trim and shape it as desired so it is also suitable for smaller gardens. In spring it attracts attention with its white fragrant flowers and in autumn with its magnificent scarlet foliage. Its fruit is a glossy black berry containing very high concentration of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other valuable substances.
The concentration of natural antioxidants is ten times higher than in blueberries and cranberries. It is believed that Native North Americans first used this attractive plant for food and as well as medicine.
Today the healing properties of chokeberry are well known: it helps treat anaemia, regulate blood pressure, stabilize blood sugar; it also helps with digestive problems and migraine and due to high concentration of antioxidants it relieves stress, helps with chronic fatigue and slows aging.
The berries are edible and can be used to make juice, yoghurt, compote, marmalade, jam, liquor, brandy and high quality red desert wine.
Chokeberry is not a demanding plant; it will grow well on a range of soils. It is resistant to cold and appears to have very few disease and pests problems so it does not require spraying. Regular watering and pruning is all you need to do to enjoy the fruits of this attractive shrub.
