Have you ever thought about having an iguana as a pet? It may sound unusual but it is not that uncommon.
The green iguana due to its calm disposition is one of the most popular reptile pets. It is native to tropical areas of south and Central America and it can grow to 2 metres in length if well fed and taken care of. Their life expectancy is 10 – 15 years.

However, a potential owner should think well if such an animal is an appropriate pet for him.
Having the iguana as a pet is quite demanding with regard to space, temperature, humidity and light.

Space – a terrarium should be at least twice as long and three times as high as the iguana itself. It should also have bamboo branches or platforms because iguanas like to climb and bask in the sun.

Temperature – it should be between 21-30°C because this is important for their digestion. The difference between the day and night temperature should be 10-15 °C.

Humidity – it is necessary to spray the terrarium with lukewarm water daily.

Light – neon lighting as well as UV lighting for basking

Diet – iguanas are herbivorous. Their diet should consist of 80% of vegetables, 10% of fruit, and the rest is food like boiled eggs, boiled rice, and bread. Vitamins and mineral supplements should be added twice or three times a week and it is important to have fresh water in the terrarium all the time.

Socialization – if tamed as very young iguana can even respond to its name. It can be very aggressive during the breeding season or if it feels its territory is threatened.

If you follow these instructions your iguana will probably be fit and healthy.
