Motion sickness

Motion sickness
When travelling, some people suffer from nausea and headaches, and even vomiting, and it is usually accompanied by dizziness, paleness and cold sweat. These are all symptoms of kinetosis or motion sickness.

What causes motion sickness?

Motion sickness is more frequently felt by people with a more sensitive equilibrium system, and it is a consequence of using a method of transport. It is a condition in which a disagreement exists between visually perceived movement and the vestibular system’s sense of movement. For instance, when feeling motion but not seeing it (for example, in a ship with no windows), the inner ear transmits to the brain that it senses motion, but the eyes tell the brain that everything is still. The central nervous system reacts by activating the vomiting centre in the brain.

Treatment

If you suffer from motion sickness, it is recommended to avoid heavy meals and alcohol before and during travelling. However, you should not go on a trip on an empty stomach, a light meal is desirable (e.g., muesli, cereals). It is a good idea to regularly drink small amounts of water or non-alcoholic beverages in order to avoid dehydration. Light snacks are also recommended during the trip as well as light meals after it. You should not make frequent head and body movements or look out of the window on the side. Rather focus on a steady object in front of you, and preferably sit in a front seat. By no means should you read during the trip.

If these tips do not help, you can always take some motion sickness medicine (usually in the form of pills) which has to be taken some time before the trip, and they can be obtained without a prescription. There are also plasters that you stick behind your ear, or bracelets that massage certain parts of your wrist.

Finally, you can help yourself in a natural way by chewing pieces of freshly peeled ginger roots. The advantage of ginger over medicine is that it does not make you feel sleepy.
